2022 PROGRAM
New works for a sustainable future
Our 2020-2022 creative theme PARADISE explores the world we have, the future we want and all that may be lost. Projects are varied, and crossover between our installation and community engagement practice.
-
Simplicity, play, sustainability
-
Natural and/or recycled materials
-
Off Grid power when possible
-
Accessible, free arts experiences made for a better tomorrow
Only new projects are featured here. Existing works offered in 2022 include: Electric Meadow, Chromatica, Bloom, Morphology, the Flower Labyrinth and the Fireflies.

OCULUS
Theme: Optical Play
From MAY 2022
Zoetrope animations
Oculus is our first solar illuminated work. While the lighting is simple, the design maximises the potential of a single, white light source through reflection, refraction, kinetic movement and dichroic colour. Oculus is playful, interactive and explores pre-tech optical toys in a new way.
Spinning the zoetrope inside each beacon throws beams of reflected and refracted light in a wide arc. This dual engagement encourages play-based interaction while creating a dynamic, immersive environment for crowds.
Tech Requirements: Solar Powered
Companion Artworks: Chromatica

OASIS
Theme: Imagined Organisms
From MARCH 2022
Verdant islands of synthetic flora
Designed specifically for built environments, Oasis brings organic forms crafted from consumer waste to life in urban streets and laneways.
The Oasis islands are handcrafted in extreme detail with over 100 PET bottles creating each flower. Intricate petals and tendrils rustle with the breeze, each stem glows, and the islands appear to hover in a shifting spectrum of light.
Tech Requirements: Battery Powered / Mains Power Option
Companion Artworks: Flower Labyrinth, Amorphia (Puppets)

AMORPHIA
Theme: Imagined Organisms
From JUNE 2022
Trash sprites beguile, surprise and make you smile.
A kinetic cluster of 3 large-scale body puppets made from hand tinted recycled & reclaimed soft plastics. The Amorphia puppets express themselves physically through their brightly coloured bodies and lights.
Inspired by single-cell ameba, Amorphia are imagined plastic-based lifeforms encouraging play, spontaneous engagement and curiosity while promoting the themes of sustainability and creative recycling. As roving puppets, they are accessible, fun and unique.
Tech Requirements: Battery Powered
Companion Artworks: Flower Labyrinth, Oasis

CORTEX
Theme: Immersive Environments
From JULY 2022
The mysterious immersive beauty of Mangroves
A geometric tangle of towering arches, Cortex is a large-scale inflatable structure inspired by Australia's Mangrove Forests. Waves of light wash through the luminous roots, while the hypnotic soundscape swoons with sonic humidity, then crackles and pops with life.
Mangroves cover almost one third of Australia's coastline - over 11,500 square kilometres. These biodiverse habitats prevent erosion, filter inland run-off, and provide essential breeding grounds. Rising sea levels and coastal development threaten the health of Australia's Mangroves.
Tech Requirements: TBA
Companion Artworks: Bloom, Frog Hollow

FROG HOLLOW
Theme: Immersive Environments
From OCTOBER 2022
Intricate light & sound sculptures inspired by endangered frogs
Textured and patterned, Frog Hollow combines the look of leadlight with tactile, hand-dyed recycled materials to create a landscape of luminous sculptural shelters inspired by critically endangered native frogs. Nestle inside to hear the distinct calls, or wander between the sculptures to see the sounds and lights link in harmony.
Frog Hollow is designed to be presented with Intertidal. Both lighting and sound designs are complimentary and together create a complex visual and sonic landscape.
Tech Requirements: Solar & Battery Powered
Companion Artworks: Bloom, Intertidal
