nightlight review Adelaide Fringe Festival 2008

Josh is in hospital, dying. The teenager's nurse is the only uplifitng contact he has
during the day, while his mother is unable to cope with the awful situation happening
before her eyes. Her tokens of love – heart shaped boxes of chocolates – stack up in
his cupboard, so she dulls the pain and the isolation at the pokies.
Meanwhile, the highlight of Josh’s day is in the morning when he gets his medication
and the wonderful hallucinations it brings.
This production didn’t seek to answer the questions but simply put the situation in all
its complexity before us in achingly beautiful, poetic style. The acting was superb,
just about faultless, and instead of twanging our emotional strings just for the sake of it,
the play avoided over-emotionalism and melodrama and was all the more classy for that.
Oh, and it just so happened that it was all done by puppets.
