Winner of the 2009 Adelaide Fringe Festival Best Puppetry
Award, ‘nightlight’ was first commissioned by the UNIMA
South Africa ‘Out the Box’ festival of puppetry and visual
theatre, for performance in the Adult Festival Program,
September 2008.

‘nightlight’ is a poignant coming of age tale
about Josh, a
14 year old Australian boy growing up in the face of illness.
At night he dreams of home and the man he wants to be,
but during the day he is frail, seriously ill and confined to a
hospital bed. The performance explores the tension
between Josh’s reality and dreams. His Mother Sue battles
her loneliness while bringing Josh daily presents more
suited to the child he used to be, while the gentle care of
Nurse Vicky inspires Josh’s first feelings of love and lust.

Devised and performed by puppeteers Beth McMahon and
Michael Bevitt, ‘nightlight’ showcases both the whimsy and
gravity of contemporary puppet theatre for adult
audiences. As Josh withdraws from the outside world,
scenes shift from the sterile Hospital reality, to the realm of
drug-induced fantasies.

“You guys did such amazing work-
everyone loved your show,
I mean really loved it…  A real coup!”

Aja Marneweck, Artistic Director
‘Out the Box’ Festival of Puppetry and Visual Theatre
... achingly beautiful, poetic style.
The acting was superb, just about faultless...
Oh, and it just so happened
that it was all done by puppets.
