The raw latex mould taken from a human
head sized clay sculpture. It took 5 litres of
latex to fill the head cavity in the plaster
mould. The cheek is litres would be enough)
and had to run to the shop to get more!!
The mould was left full of latex for 4 hours.
Due to the dry conditions in the cellar where
he was made and the quality of the plaster,
the latex adhered almost too well to the
plaster mould. The first latex cast was 1cm
thick across the cheeks and skull, while the
nose and eyebrows were solid. This was too
thick and too heavy to manipulate, so
subsequent moulds were made. This picture
is of the third mould, where the latex is .5 cm
thick everywhere.
I chose to paint the Prof's head all in charcoal
grey as a base colour, before building layers
of brown, orange, green, blue, red and yellow.
At the bottom of the photo, you can see his
lycra neck. The lycra sleeve was sewn into the
latex mould and the foam filling before
painting. The neck was painted with the same
colours and layers as the face - minus the
charcoal grey base coat.
