Participants begin the workshop by building their own
character mask. Cheap, recycled materials are used to
encourage the participants to create interesting forms, not
necessarily beautiful, or beautifully crafted forms. Cardboard
boxes are an ideal tool for this workshop as they are light,
strong, and can be used to create interesting angles, planes
and curves on the mask.
After creating a mask, the participants are lead in a discussion
of the form, and character in each mask, helping them to form
an identity in each creation.
After a short break we begin again with a physical warm up,
and exercises in focus, group work, and physical tempo.
Participants work in pairs developing timing and a sense of
physical unity between them. Following this, the instructors
demonstrate a short introduction to character mask techniques.
Including:
beginning from a neutral body
focus and direction
wearing the mask
physical presence and focus in the mask
character physicalisation and intention
clarity of movement and expression
Participants then work in small groups with one mask to
develop the physical character. Exercises in groups continue,
building up to the development of short scenes between two /
three masks, two performers, and a group director.
